Harvesting Honey Just for Fun

Luis Zevallos, Co-Owner, Checking Out a Frame from the Hive at Our Marketing Office in Oakland, CA

The honeys we sell come from very special places, like Captain Cook, HI (Royal Hawaiian Honey) and the state of Ceara, in Northeastern Brazil (Bee Well Honey). But we do all of the sales and marketing from our office in Oakland, CA, where we also keep three hives of bees out on the back deck. (Oakland used to be a farming community and the city ordinances do allow for up to seven hives per property.)

We harvested some of our Oakland honey recently. Here are some photos and tips for all you amateur beekeepers out there. Are you the urban homesteader-type who wants to plant a garden and keep chickens in the middle of a city? Consider keeping a hive or two of bees.
